Since I was a kid I dreamed of being a filmmaker.
Thanks to DuClaw Brewing Company, I got to make 93 short films, with almost complete artistic freedom, as long as I found a way to shoehorn the monthly seasonal beer release into the plot or theme of the story.
For more than a quarter of my life I wrote copy and made almost 300 videos about beer… and I got PAID to do it! I was DuClaw’s “Minister of Propaganda.” I got to live a dream.
Tuesday, May 30th, I woke from that dream.
When you give everything that you have to something that you love for thirteen years and suddenly it’s gone, it’s like having your identity yanked away from you.
You wonder if who you thought you were is who you actually are. Could I have accomplished all of the things that I’ve achieved in the last decade without visionary brewers, awesome volunteer actors and crew, Dave’s (Founder/President) ambition, and Elizabeth’s (VP) incredible ability to put people in positions that allow them to thrive?
I have no ill will. I was assured that ending the video program was strictly financial and not performance related. Dave and E were generous with signing letters of recommendation. Dave volunteered to provide phone references and “anything else” that I need to find work. Classy to the end.
That is how the story of DuClaw Brewing Company’s OG Minister of Propaganda ends. But the end of who you were is just the prelude to discovering who you can be.
Yeah… this sucks; but there are new adventures are on the horizon.
