On October 11th, 2016, at 11am PST, RED officially announced their newest cameras, featuring a revolutionary 8k resolution sensor (Helium), and not only offered them to deposit holders waiting for Scarlet-Ws FIRST… but at a ridiculous $10,000 discount, too. It was billed as both a mea culpa for “fucking up” (Jarred’s words) the Scarlet-W launch, and a Hail Mary designed to lure enough people out of the Scarlet-W and Raven queues to break up the production bottleneck.
Most companies would NEVER apologize for having a ridiculously popular product, let alone offer a 33% discount on a model a few features away from the top of their line as an insanely generous apology. But the RED team is different. They’re building far more than an unparalleled portfolio of cutting edge image acquisition tools, and I wanted to be a part of it more than ever.
So, on Tuesday, Oct 11th, at 11:03AM (PST), I emailed Nick and told him to call me as soon as he was free to discuss switching my deposit again… and my phone rang less than one minute after I clicked send.
Everyone, say hello to RED 8k S35 Epic-W #001165, aka, “River”.
After a hopefully short learning curve, she’ll be available with me as camera op/writer/director/producer/whatever is needed, for freelance projects that I can make work with my DuClaw schedule.
Thank you Jarred, Brent, Nick, and Austin at RED; Dave, E, Rusty, and Brian at DuClaw, for helping me complete the journey that I started almost 6 years ago. I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
Before anyone asks, yes, she’s named after the most “epic” woman in SciFi. And yes, I’m aware that I’m a giant nerd.
